What Can Wedding Maps Be Used For

Watercolour wedding maps can be included with your invitations, either as a separate card, or if you’re having a folded invitation, the map can be printed on one of the panels. After the wedding they can also be placed in keepsake boxes, or printed, framed and hung on the wall in your home.

How to Make a Map for a Wedding Invitation

  1. First find a good illustrator - that’s where I come in… My maps involve lots of bespoke hand painted illustration work, which can take 3-6 weeks, so get booked in early and don’t leave it until the last minute.
  2. Choose your colours. Each wedding map is a bespoke piece of artwork and can be tailored to suit the colour scheme of your wedding. Within the illustration, the ground and ocean can be realistic colours such as sage green and dusty blue. Or if you are having brighter colours, I can make the land area pinks and oranges, or lilacs and purples - my design process is completely flexible to suit your wedding.
  3. Decide what landmarks, buildings and focal points are needed on your map. For example, I painted the map below of Watch Hill in Rhode Island. The Ocean House is the wedding venue, which can be seen at the top right. On the wedding map, I have also included a popular street with lots of local hotels, for guests not staying on-site and useful tourist attractions such as the Olympia Tea Rooms, Flying Horse Carousel and beaches. For guests interested in fishing or sailing, I have included Potter Cove and Foster Cove, plus the iconic Watch Hill Lighthouse.

  4. Provide good quality photos, from the angles that you’d like illustrating. I will need a photo of each building or landmark that you’d like painting - whether that might be your wedding venue, a bar or restaurant, local park or perhaps your house. I will also need an aerial / overhead photo or sketch of the area and roads, and any wooded areas or grassland to include. You should mark each building or landmark on the map, so I know where to place everything.
  5. Next I will get to work on the illustrations and map itself. Once complete, I will send over a first draft / proof for your approval. My wedding illustration packages include 3 rounds of amendments, should you wish to make any changes before they are printed.
  6. Finally, once approved, I will have the maps printed and assembled with your wedding invitations, ready to dazzle your guests! Or, if you have ordered a digital wedding map, I will send over the print-ready files.
