Creative, unique and personal, folded wedding invitations add an extra layer of sophistication to your wedding stationery. They are a modern alternative to the traditional pocketfolds, and much more cost effective! With space inside for your ‘Order of the Day’, guest information and RSVP details, folded invitations negate the need to have lots of separate cards, keeping the stationery neat and tidy and also keeping the cost down.
I often receive enquiries about creating pocketfold invitations, or perhaps clients have found inspo on Pinterest, and while I’m happy to create anything my clients want, I always suggest folded invitations as a more cost-effective option.
The most budget-friendly of my folded invites are the floral and lemons designs. The Roses and Eucalyptus Invitation features a popular blush pink and sage colour palette, while the Wildflower Folded Invitation has a splash of hot pink and beautiful blooms in pink, blue and yellow. Both are sealed with a wax seal and come with coloured envelopes.

What Types of Folded Invitations are There?
Most of my folded invitations are gatefold style. They have a centre panel and 2 flaps that fold out revealing the important details of your wedding. These are great for all types of wedding - from traditional church weddings in the beautiful British countryside, to destination weddings in the tropics. Other folded styles include a half fold, which is like a traditional greetings card and a concertina fold which is a zig zag style folding card.
How Can You Personalise Folded Invitations?
As a specialist in hand painted illustration and bespoke wedding stationery, I can think of lots of ways to personalise folded invitations.
- Add a custom venue illustration to your invitations
- Add a crest or monogram to the inside
- Get creative with wax seals - I have lots of floral, botanical and themed stamp designs to choose from - or why not have a stamp made with your initials?
- Add a printed belly band - this could be stripes, florals and foliage or your initials
- Customise your invitations with envelope liners - What separates luxury stationery from the mediocre is the attention to detail and little touches that make it unique, such as printed envelope liners. They could be printed with a repeat pattern, crest, your venue or even a pet portrait!
Bespoke Folded Wedding Invitations
Below is a folded invitation I created for clients S & T.
They were married at Dalhousie and were returning with guests to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The couple wanted autumnal colours and a hint of emerald green, so I painted the venue in watercolours with autumnal trees and foliage. They also had lots of exciting tourist activities planned for the guests, and wanted a map of Edinburgh, which I painted and printed on the reverse of the invitations.
FAQ
How do you close a gatefold?
Gatefold invitations need a little something to hold them closed. This could be a single wax seal, vellum or paper belly band or a gorgeous ribbon secured with a wax seal.
What size paper is a gatefold?
As standard, my folded invitations are A5 size, but they could also be 5” x 7” or square. Please get in touch if you are looking for a custom size.
How do you make invitations look expensive?
Folded invitations are a great way of achieving a premium finish, while looking after your wedding budget. They have a luxury look and feel, are customised and personal to you and your wedding. The colours can be adapted to match your colour scheme and I have included extra custom illustrations for clients in the past, varying from pet portraits to things representing their culture and heritage.
